Plan Features
How it Works
Your insurance premium buys you protection from the extraordinary expenses of long-term adult care services, such as: home health care, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes.
Benefits are sold in monthly or daily dollar amounts to offset the costs of the above-mentioned services. For example, if a semiprivate room in an assisted living facility costs $150 per day, you could purchase insurance that pays you $150 per day to cover that cost for as long a period as you determine.
Inflation protection and other features can be purchased as riders.
Benefits
Generally, you are eligible for benefits when you need substantial assistance with two activities of daily living, which include bathing, continence, dressing, transferring, toileting, and eating -- or when you need substantial supervision due to a cognitive impairment. Policies cover skilled, intermediate, and custodial care received at home or in an adult day care center, assisted living facility, or nursing facility.
Benefits typically include coverage for long-term mental illnesses such as Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's, Parkinson's, as well as other unfortunate maladies of life.
Exclusions can include such things as war, self-inflicted injury, attempted suicide, addiction to alcohol or illegal drugs. Refer to your sample insurance contract for specific limitations and exclusions, as these may vary depending upon carrier.
